Awards News: Kids Choice Awards, Genesis Awards and London Film Critics' Circle Awards

The Academy Awards get a lot of griping from people who are not happy with their choices – usually just about everyone.  But at least their choices are made by people who know the art of film, or at least they should.  To see what happens when awards are given with a more populist approach, you can compare them to the People’s Choice Awards, the MTV Awards or the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.  The nominees for the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards were just announced and are listed below.   Miley Cyrus leads with four nominations – favourite movie actress, TV actress, female singer and song "Party in the USA."  The Twilight Saga: New Moon followed with three nominations for Favorite movie, actor and book.  The Jonas Brothers also received three nominations.  The awards ceremony will be hosted by Kevin James and held on March 27 in Los Angeles.

Also just announced, Humane Society of the United States announced the nominees for their 24th annual Genesis Awards, given in recognition of animal-friendly stories in film , TV and news.  In the film catergories, the nominees for top film were Up, Hotel for Dogs, and The Men Who Stare at Goats.  The documentary nominees were The CoveFood, Inc., and The End of the Line.  With the exception of Hotel for Dogs, all are excellent movies.  The awards ceremony will take place on March 20 in Beverly Hills.

Earlier today, the 30th annual London Film Critics' Circle Awards were held in central London.  The award for Film of the Year went to Un Prophète (A Prophet), a French prison drama.  Tomas Alfredson's Låt den rätte komma in (Let the Right One In) took Best Foreign Film, thus shutting out the highly regarded Das Weisse Band (The White Ribbon) by Michael Haneke.  But the big winner on the night was Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank which is released here on Friday February 19.  It won best British film, best British director, as well as two acting awards:  best newcomer for Katie Jarvis, and best British supporting actor for Michael Fassbender.  Quentin Tarantino won and outstanding achievement award and Christoph Waltz won best actor for his sadistic Nazi in Inglourious Basterds.  The best actress award went to Mo'Nique in Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire. The best British actor prize went to Colin Firth for his portrayal of a gay professor in A Single Man, while Carey Mulligan won best British actress for her role as a student in An Education.  Anne-Marie Duff won best British supporting actress for Nowhere Boy, Duncan Jones won breakthrough British film-maker for Moon, and Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Toni Roche won the screenwriting award for In The Loop.  The BAFTA Awards take place on Sunday, February 21.

The following are the nominees and winners lists.
